They used to be fairly simple affairs with the specific purpose of rehearsing the ceremony.  No more!  Today's rehearsal dinners have taken on a life of their own.  Often themed, and sometimes fairly elaborate, rehearsal dinners can solve the problem of what to do without of town guests the night before the wedding.  They are a very carefully considered "first" in a series of celebrations that sometimes lasts all weekend long.
